Chiang Mai is a small city located about 700 km north of Bangkok. We flew from Bangkok for about $50 one way each. You could take a night train for cheaper… but $50 seemed like a pretty good deal to me 🙂
Chiang Mai means “new city”… which of course is all relative because it was founded in 1296!
We stayed at the Sirilanna Hotel. I can not recommend this hotel enough. It was expensive for Thailand, but still only about $70 per night which included a a lovely breakfast. We actually got it a bit cheaper because we had booked a lot of our hotels in Asia on Agoda and had racked up some “points” which we applied to our stay at this hotel.
I would consider this a boutique hotel. It was in the old centre of Chiang Mai and you could easily walk to anything you needed. The rooms were absolutely gorgeous and the staff was among the most helpful we’ve encountered. If we come back to Chiang Mai we will definitely stay here again.
